Mandatory Fees (as of 2026)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sustainable Development Fee (SDF):<\/strong> a daily levy that funds Bhutan\u2019s national healthcare, education and conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Visitor<\/th><th>SDF per person, per night<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>International adults<\/td><td>USD 100 (discounted rate, valid until 31 August 2027)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Children aged 6\u201312<\/td><td>USD 50<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Children under 6<\/td><td>Exempt<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Indian nationals<\/td><td>INR 1,200<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Visa fee:<\/strong> a one-time, non-refundable fee of USD 40. Citizens of India, Bangladesh and the Maldives don\u2019t pay it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Goods and Services Tax (GST):<\/strong> from 1 January 2026, a 5% GST applies to tourism services such as hotels, transport and guides. The SDF itself is not subject to GST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Visa &amp; Entry Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Visa before arrival:<\/strong> all foreign nationals need a visa before arriving, except citizens of India, Bangladesh and the Maldives.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>How to apply:<\/strong> online through the Department of Immigration, or through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Passport validity:<\/strong> your passport must remain valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure date.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian nationals:<\/strong> an entry permit is issued on a valid Indian passport or Voter ID card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Travel Regulations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Guides:<\/strong> you can now design your own itinerary, but a licensed guide is still required for travel beyond Thimphu and Paro and for visiting certain cultural sites.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Permits:<\/strong> a Route Permit is needed for travel outside Thimphu and Paro, and a Trekking Permit is required for mountaineering.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>24-hour exemption:<\/strong> casual visitors staying under 24 hours in designated border towns, such as Phuentsholing and Gelephu, don\u2019t pay the SDF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>These rules are set by the Royal Government of Bhutan and may change.
